Who I am and what I’ve been up to

Me on my first day as a nurse.

Welcome to my very first blog, covering who I am and what I’ve been up to lately. It also introduces a few sections that I will be including in my upcoming blogs.

Who am I?

I am a brand spanking new neonatal nurse, pictured above with my cheesy arse grin. I started my dream job a few weeks ago and feel blessed to work alongside and learn from the incredible nurses in the special care baby unit. I am an older sister of four crazy and amazingly awesome in their own way individuals and a daughter of the most loving and supportive mum…

A rap about grief after losing a parent

Photo by Callie Gibson on Unsplash

It’s madness,

tryna hold back this sadness,

tryna not fade to blackness,

but it happens,

and it’s madness,

Because you have been right there since,

the day I was born, ‘96,

and now there is this blankness,

in my life,

there is this absence,

So, I’m right here feeling ratshit,

but I really got to study for exams, see?

Life goes on, and it’s tragic,

make the tears disappear like magic, man,

You were meant to be like Stephen Hawking,

you were meant to beat the disease,

you would keep on walking,

you would keep the faith,

you would find…

Please stop doing this.

Here’s my list of the worst kind of chess players. If you play chess online then you’ve probably encountered one or more of them.

The Know-it-all.

The ones that write “gg” (good game) or tell you to resign when they think they are in a winning position. These are my favourite players to beat. The ones that celebrate far too early and give me the last laugh. Speaking of laughing…

The Joker.

The types of players that feel joy in laughing at others. I love to beat a player who tries to make you feel shit when you make a mistake. Well, guess what…

Only you know what truly makes you happy.

What is happiness?

Merriam-Webster defines happiness as “a state of well-being and contentment” or “joy”. It is an emotion that is created by none other than yourself. Everyone wants happiness. Sure, a good cry is necessary now and then, but all anyone really wants is to be happy when all is said and done.

What makes me happy?

In the pursuit of happiness, one must ask themself, “what makes me happy?”. Of course, what makes me happy may be totally different to what makes you happy. Your guide to a happy life will depend on your own answer to this question, but hopefully, I can give you…

Next month I start my dream job

Me and Lukan in SCBU.

Four years ago, my brother Lukan was born a month and a half early. His underdeveloped lungs lacked surfactant and he wasn’t able to coordinate his breaths with his sucks and swallows. He was taken care of by the amazing nurses at the special care baby unit (SCBU). This is where a passion ignited in me to become a registered nurse.

Fast forward to a few months ago, I completed a nine-week placement in the SCBU as a student nurse.

I felt like I was exactly where I wanted to be.

I was guttered to leave and determined to get…

And how we overcame them

Photo by Filipe Almeida on Unsplash

Here’s a fun fact: my partner is 39 years my senior. Relationships are hard and an age gap surely puts a spanner in the works. We are not a perfect couple (see I Don’t Fucking Understand Men and “Oh, My Darling”) but we love each other and that’s really all that matters. Here are a few of the struggles we have faced in our relationship and how we overcame them.

1. The stares.

It is not uncommon for people to stare at us when we show affection in public. I would stare too if I was an outsider looking in. We used to…

Dare to imagine

How can I become a better version of myself? What does that even look like?

Who do I want to become?

These are the questions I have been asking myself, lately.

My life purpose

For the last three and a half years, I have been working towards my goal of becoming a nurse practitioner in a neonatal unit. In New Zealand, registered nurses can take their knowledge and skills and complete some further studies to undertake a role in which they are able to diagnose and prescribe medication. This is my dream.

A healthier me

One step to becoming a better me is making simple decisions…

Reviewing My Aimchess Report

Screenshot by Author.

Aimchess is a website that, among other things, creates a report from your 40 most recent games in the time control of your choice from chess.com or lichess.com. In this article, I will be reviewing my report. I hope that by recognising my strengths and weaknesses, I will be able to focus my learning in the areas in which it is needed the most. According to the overview, my overall weaknesses are time management, resourcefulness, and the ending, while my strengths are the opening, advantage capitalisation, and tactics.
